MediaPower Inc. announced the delivery of a Dalet digital production system to Mediaset

MediaPower is pleased to present this Dalet Enterprise Edition proposal for a Digital Production System to Mediaset. We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss our offering in greater detail and answer any specific question you may have. After the several meetings we hold at Mediaset, we believe we understand Mediaset philosophy for this digital news room system and have decided to submit our own response, suggesting a best-of-breed approach using proven components, offering a complete solution to Mediaset.  Our solution answers the requirements in terms of workflow, of metadata handling and of improved productivity from ingest to archive. We have experience with similar projects in both standard definition (mostly in DV/DVCPRO and IMX) and high definition (HDV and DVCPro HD) for news and sports and have also several MAM projects in HD (DVCProHD/XDCAM HD). We understand that Mediaset video formats standards are for the SD format : D10 IMX 50 Mbps with 8 audio tracks wrapped in MXF Op1a, and for the HD format XDCAM HD 50 Mbps wrapped in MXF Op1a. We understand that Mediaset consider very important to maintain those formats and those wrapper even in the production cycle. Dalet is ready to commit to develop and support those formats for this project, this has been quoted as a specific development services in our proposal (support of MXF). The timeline of this project is extremely ambitious and we acknowledge the need for on time delivery. We have thus proposed a proven solution, with known components such as Apple Final Cut Pro editors, fiber-attached to a production Storage Area Networks from DataDirectNetworks with Storenext file system. As for the ingest and playout we suggest Gruppo TNT video server (OpenClient) – the servers beeing integrated and supported by Dalet. Quantum Storage Manager is considered to be the data mover from/to the SAN to/from archive.Regarding the video servers, we understand that Mediaset has a very strong technology partnership with Gruppo TNT and Dalet would like to take advantage of this situation to build a strong technological solution having Dalet Enterprise Edition controlling Gruppo TNT video server for ingest and playout and being connected to the Datadirect SAN with Storenext file system. Dalet and Gruppo TNT have already started the integration and consider to have the integration ready by June 2010 – for a deployment in Mediaset during this summer. We have deployed systems using SAN and NAS technology for their production storage, including Quantum StorNext file system over Hitachi, HP or Data Direct Networks SAN, NAS with Netapp, Ciprico and technologies such as Omneon MediaGrid. Because of the preference from Mediaset and because of the performance requirements for the project, we believe the Data Direct SAN is the best solution for the production storage. In addition, since the design of this SAN is driven by bandwidth, rather than capacity, we can allocate more capacity for a reduced cost, such reducing the need for a large, separate nearline storage. The solution offered is a single system distributed over several sites (Milan, Rome, regional sites) with a common unique database for unique, simplified search and with advanced capabilities to browse edit proxies over the WAN and migrate high resolution video content over between the different sites. Finally the system will integrates with the systems currently used in Mediaset, as for instance Prima Pagina, Scheduall, Chyron, TNT Graphic Pack, Web publishing system, SyntecMedia …

SeaChange Transforms Production Workflow at Television Suisse Romande
MediaLibrary/MediaClient Platform Cuts Storage Costs across Production and Delivers Significantly Greater Workflow Efficiencies

ACTON, Mass., and GENEVA (March 27, 2007) – SeaChange International’s (NASDAQ: SEAC) breakthrough MediaLibrary/MediaClient architecture is radically transforming production and post-production workflow at European broadcaster Télévision Suisse Romande (TSR).  Through the advantages of open and extremely scalable Network Attached Storage (NAS) and patented single-copy storage, TSR is establishing universal shared storage for any device and any media file type in the capture, edit and playout chain.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, TSR is the dominant multichannel broadcaster serving French-speaking Swiss viewers.  For its extensive production requirements, it has rolled out three SeaChange Broadcast MediaLibrary (BML) 24000ex systems to initially make more than 2,500 hours @IMX50-MXF of online storage available to EVS XT2 disk recorders (for live content acquisition), Avid NewsCutter XP NLEs (for post-production) and five SeaChange MediaClient codecs.  SeaChange’s inherent support of common IT standards will allow TSR to push EVS’s non-proprietary IMX50-MXF XFile assets into more cost-efficient and centralized storage without transcoding.

Today, a five-node BML 24000ex cluster can provide more than 800 hours of storage in IMX50 format and support hundreds of IP-connected devices throughout a broadcast operation.  A single media asset (program, graphic, audio, etc.) stored on a BML can be accessed concurrently by any number of editors and producers.  Attached to MediaClients, the BML even supports simultaneous on-air delivery of Standard Definition and High Definition streams from a single media asset.

“The MediaLibrary/ MediaClient architecture is the core of our new tapeless environment and delivers tremendous workflow gains by increasing interoperability between broadcast applications,” said Mr. Claude Mex, associate director of production, TSR.  “We have been able to ensure that the exceptional performance of the storage server is extended to the overall solution through the high bandwidth transfer rates possible between the BML and EVS servers.  We’re finally capturing efficiencies and new capabilities that were unimaginable working with tape, while gaining a fully HD-ready infrastructure.”

“Production, sports in particular, is probably broadcast’s most challenging environment, and your workflow clearly determines how well you perform on-air in front of viewers,” said Chris West, vice president of broadcast sales, SeaChange.  “Using an open architecture to link content capture, production and on-air delivery, TSR will achieve optimal efficiency.  We believe they have set up a breakthrough workflow that will be adopted by other broadcasters.”

MediaLibrary/MediaClient vs. Legacy Storage Arrays

The SeaChange Scalable NAS architecture eliminates the need for proprietary software on client workstations. There is no need for costly and time intensive integration – just qualification.  This also eliminates performance bottlenecks created by metadata servers and NAS gateways.  There is no single point of failure, a vulnerability that’s inherent in legacy storage arrays.  By distributing file system processing evenly to each node in the cluster, SeaChange’s patented technology eliminates the usual pitfalls of the alternative file system controller approach.  And, unlike any competing architectures, the SeaChange BML’s patented MediaCluster ‘single-copy’ technology guarantees fault-resilience without costly mirroring.

Integrated software-based MediaClient codecs separately perform the real-time encoding or decoding operations.  MediaClients support the wide range of compression formats and file wrappers used in transmission, editing and production, including MPEG-2 long GOP format in SD and HD; frame-based formats such as IMX, DVCPro, DVCam; as well as MXF and QuickTime.  Any format will play back-to-back frames accurately from the same decoder output.  Now, completed material from production servers no longer needs to be transcoded or dubbed back to tape for ingest before playout from the on-air server, reducing operator intervention and significantly cutting the time from production to broadcast.

The range of proven content storage, streaming and management solutions on show at NAB2007 (April 16-19 in Las Vegas) will highlight SeaChange’s ability to put broadcasters on a cost-effective path to high-definition delivery and help them secure new distribution opportunities.
