Observations from NAB 2017

I was there….
Strange to say, there was once a time when the term "broadcasting" applied to just radio. Moreover, it was very one-sided. You sat in your living room and waited for broadcasts to begin. Once they were over, you talked to your neighbors about it, and that was it. A century later, we're the broadcasters - setting up our own YouTube channel, amassing thousands of Twitter followers, and reaching "neighbors" all over the globe.
Whether you just watch TV or movies, or spend your entire day posting comments on Facebook, you're part of the conversation at the NAB Show, the five-day annual convention of the National Association of Broadcasters. This year's topics covered everything from changes in social media technology to a behind-the-scenes look at HBO's pop-culture phenomenon Game of Thrones. As always in the past 30 years MediaPower was there, attending the conference, talking to many vendors, but specially listening to customers. This is what we know best.
NAB is in a transition period into a new era of media, entertainment, and technology convergence. From live streaming drones to the creative and technical processes used in creating Game of Thrones, to the technical architectures of HDR, ATSC 3.0, and VR/AR, this was one of the most interesting NAB Shows I have ever attended. And with over 200 new exhibitors on the floor, you can bet I have overreached my 10,000 steps per day on my Fitbit.
