Hello 2019! Fresh new near, fresh newsletter issue.

We have a diverse set of hot topics in this issue—from hot ones like 5G, AI, AR and VR, to Content being King at this day and age, looming threats to IOT, Cybersecurity beng driven by AI, status of ATSC 3.0 as seen at CES, and even looking at the future of film (vs. streaming). We also added some tips on mobile live streaming from one of our tech partners for those of you who are starting to look into it. Of course, what's a new year without looking at predictions? Too many out there at the start of 2019 but we hand-picked a couple of unique perspectives on what's to come for TV in 2019, including a broadcast engineer's take on how things will be shaping up.

By the way, we will be back at NAB Show this April 8 to 11 in Las Vegas. If you're going to NAB too, we'll be at the ProMAX stand SL6313. Drop by and say hello - even better, we can pick each other's brains on the same topics we have pooled together in this issue.

Happy reading!

This is how AI bias really happens—and why it’s so hard to fix

Over the past few months, we’ve documented how the vast majority of AI’s applications today are based on the category of algorithms known as deep learning, and how deep-learning algorithms find patterns in data. We’ve also covered how these technologies affect people’s lives: how they can perpetuate injustice in hiring, retail, and security and may already be doing so in the criminal legal system.
